Welcome to Year Five!
Hello and welcome to our year group page!
Rowan Class

Chestnut Class
In Chestnut Class, the class teacher is Mr Matthews. He is assisted by Ms Halman and Miss Galton.
Starting the Day
Our class doors open at 8.40am, with registration at 8.50am. As a school we are aiming for 96% attendance so please ensure that you are in on time. If you arrive after the class doors shut, you will need to go to the school office.
Snack and Lunch
In Year 5, a healthy snack can be brought from home or a paid snack from the school kitchen. This costs £3 per week and is paid through the school Gateway app.
Reading and homework
Reading is such an important part of your child's development. It helps with many things including their vocabulary, writing, spelling and understanding of the world we live in.
Children in Year 5 are expected to read for at least 3 times a week and record this in their Reading Record. Children have access to a variety of texts to choose in school, as well as access to MyOn and Accelerated Reader.
Throughout the year, children in Year 5 will complete reading assessments to ensure their reading level is progressing which also helps match books to their abilities.
Maths and Spelling & Grammar homework is also set each week. Please ensure this is completed on time. Children who miss homework and reading will be directed to study support after school.
The children will also continue to develop an understanding of the spelling, punctuation and grammar that is expected in Year 5. Children in Y5 will be given spellings to practise at home using 'Spelling Shed'.
P.E
PE is taught on WEdnesdays and Thursdays in Year 5. Please make sure your child has their correct PE kit in school on these days.
Communication
We keep you up-to-date and communicate via Class Dojo. Keep an eye on our class story for information on what we have been learning as well as important reminders. If you have any queries or concerns about your child's learning then please do not hesitate to speak to us, either by phoning the school office or sending a message on Class Dojo.
Keeping Safe
As a school, we take safeguarding very seriously. This includes online safety and we are very aware that many children enjoy playing on tablets, phones and even with Alexa!
Please help us to keep your children safe by clicking on the image below and keeping up to date with tips and ideas to keep children safe on the internet.
Uniform
Please label all uniform including coats, P.E. kit, shoes, hats and jumpers. It is extremely difficult to locate lost uniform if it does not have a name on it. We will be labelling these items if they are not already labelled. Jumpers must have the Beechwood logo.
