Maths - Place Value

To start the year we will be looking at place value within 100, which builds on the work completed in Year 1. We will be practising counting forwards and backwards from different numbers. We will think about representing numbers in different ways including using tens and ones, part whole models and place value charts. Children will be working with a hundred square to explore how numbers change when you add or subtract one or ten. We will also be comparing numbers using greater than, less than and equal to (<, > and =).

In Year 1 children began to count in 2s, 5s and 10s. In Year 2 we use this knowledge to problem solve and then begin to count in 3s.

Practising at home:

  • Counting forwards and backwards from any starting point within 100.
  • Play games which include numbers, for example, snakes and ladders.
  • Practise reading, writing and representing numbers within 100.
  • Count in 2s, 5s and 10s - there are lots of YouTube songs to help with this!
  • Play online games which support maths concepts. One website with lots of games is https://www.topmarks.co.uk/Search.aspx?Subject=16
