Spring term

English

Hansel & Gretel by Neil Gaiman

This term, we will be reading Hansel & Gretel by Neil Gaiman.

We will be writing our own dual text narrative and persuasive letter based on this book.

During this term, we will be using different objects and clues from the front cover and the text to make predictions about the story. We will look at the experiences of different characters in the story as they venture through the forest, using abstract nouns to create imagery. This will conclude with a narrative told from two points of view as the characters move closer together.

Following this we will be looking at the features of a persuasive letter. We will look at how to use modal verbs most effectively to instruct and look at how to change between the active and passive voice, considering the effect on the reader. We will then write a persuasive letter from a viewpoint of our choice based on one of the characters of the story.

Maths

In Maths, we are beginning the term by looking at ratio. This will involve introducing the ratio symbol and how to draw shapes using scales. Following on from this, we will be moving on to algebra. The children will be finding out about sequences and symbols and how to solve different equations.

History

Our Theme topic is Early Islamic Civilisation and we will be answering the question - Why was the Islamic Civilization (around 900AD) known as the Golden Age? As part of this, we will summarise and collate research about life in Baghdad, find out about the purpose of the House of Wisdom and discover the role that the Golden Age had in improving healthcare.

Science

We will be finding out about evolution and inheritance. We will be looking at how things have changed over time and how fossils can provide information from millions of years ago that shows us this. We will then focus on how specific plants and animals have adapted to their environment.

Following on from this, we will be focusing on offspring and the similarities and differences that they have with their parents.
